A seminar on geotechnically optimised slope design for open-pit mines given by Prof. Stefano Utili from Newcastle University

Updated: July 8, 2025

Prof. Utili is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Newcastle University (UK) and founder of OptimalSlope Ltd, which commercialises Slope Optimiser, the software designing optimal mine pitwall. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE), he serves on the International Technical Committee 208 for slope stability. His pioneering research delivers non-planar slope profiles that increase overall slope angles while maintaining safety factors, proven to boost mining NPV by up to 52.7% and reduce carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes CO₂ eq per mine through case studies across gold and copper operations.
